Regulatory Advice

Our Environmental lawyers routinely assist clients with compliance issues under federal, provincial and municipal environmental laws, such as spills, the import and export of chemicals and hazardous waste and fish habitat. We provide expert advice with respect to federal and provincial environmental impact assessment requirements for infrastructure projects, mining operations and energy generation facilities. Such advice ranges from quick answers regarding potential liability and routine obligations to sophisticated advice involving the implementation of management and governance systems to ensure that clients satisfy legal standards of diligence.

In addition to Canadian regulatory requirements, our Environmental lawyers assess compliance with ISO 14000 environmental management standards and consider international operations with respect to accepted guidance such as the International Finance Corporation's social and environmental sustainability performance standards and the Equator Principles.

We represent clients in regulatory enforcement actions for a broad range of environmental matters such as clean-up orders, air emission violations, water quality exceedances and worker health and safety actions.

Representative files include:

  • coordination of compliance audits for international manufacturing companies in airline, pharmaceutical, printing and electronic industries, involving countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas;
  • advising chemical and pharmaceutical companies in relation to the import of new substances;
  • representation of industrial and transport operators with respect to spills response, reporting and defence of regulatory enforcement;
  • advising mine owner regarding development opportunities within UNESCO Biosphere.
